피터 티엘 (Peter Thiel)

페이팔, 페이스북, 프렌드스터, 링크드인, 슬라이드닷컴, 옐프의 공통점은 무엇일까요?

피터 티엘입니다.

오늘의 주인공은 맥스 레브친과 페이팔을 공동창업했던 피터 티엘입니다. 티엘은 현재 클라리움캐피탈이라는 2조원이 넘는 규모의 국제적인 헤지펀드 대표이며, 더파운더스펀드라는 벤처캐피탈의 대표입니다. 

인터넷 벤처들의 역사를 공부하다 보면, 자주 등장하는 인물들이 있는데 그 중 업적에 비해 시선을 덜 받는 사람 중 대표적인 사례가 아마도 피터 티엘이 아닐까 합니다. 피터 티엘은 1998년 레브친과 다른 몇몇 공동창업자와 함께  Confinity 라는 회사를 창업합니다. Confinity는 나중에 X.com 이라는 회사와 합병하여 PayPal이 됩니다. 2002년 페이팔은 나스닥에 상장하게 되고, 그 해 이베이에 약 $1.5 Billion에 인수됩니다. 인수될 당시 티엘이 가지고 있던 지분 3.7%는 그에게 $55 Million을 가져다 주었고, 이를 종자돈으로 하여 현재의 클라리움캐피탈이라는 헤지펀드를 만들게 됩니다. 

티엘은 2004년 페이스북에 50만 달러를 투자하면서 초기 엔젤투자자가 됩니다. 현재도 그는 페이스북의 이사회에 등재되어 있습니다. 페이스북 외에도 앞서 말했던 여러 회사에 자신의 자금이나 그가 운영하는 벤처펀드를 이용해 투자를 했습니다.

그가 운영하는 헤지펀드는 2003년 달러약세 트레이드와 2005년 달러강세와 에너지랠리에 투자해서 큰 수익을 냈고, 몇 개 저널에서 상도 받았습니다. 2005년에는 더파운더스펀드라는 벤처캐피탈 회사를 설립하여 벤처투자를 하고 있습니다. 2006년부터는 노화방지, 환경, 저널리즘 등에도 기부하고 있습니다.

티엘은 스탠포드대학교에서 20세기 현대철학을 전공했고, 더스탠포드리뷰라는 교내신문을 창간하기도 했습니다. 재학시절에는 체스 챔피언이기도 했습니다. 졸업 후에는 변호사가 되어 법무업무를 하다 1996년 그의 첫 헤지펀드인 티엘캐피탈매니지먼트를 설립했습니다.

벤처기업가, 헤지펀드매니저, 벤처투자자 = 피터 티엘입니다. (하나 더: 최근에는 "Thank you for Smoking"이라는 영화제작도 하고 있다고 하네요.)

Alfa Giulietta sets the pace at Monza as Superbike safety car

As one of the most historic racing tracks in Italy, if not the world, Monza is inextricably intertwined with Alfa Romeo. Now those ties have been reinforced with the introduction at the circuit of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta as the safety car for the Superbike World Championship, which held its fifth round at Monza this past weekend.

The Giulietta takes over pacing duties for SBK (as the series is known in shorthand) from the MiTo, which itself had assumed the mantle from the 159. The Quadrifoglio Verde version, with its 235-horsepower, 1.7-liter turbo four, will continue its role for the eight rounds remaining in the series this season. Landrover Discovery 3

I am driving Landrover's DISCOVERY 3.

Yes, it is my car.

Discovery has been my fantasy for the other world where I have never been, or the other side of me that I did not discover yet.

The fantasy started from the Jeremy's journey to the top of scottish mountain with Discovery. When Jeremy reached to the top of mountain, he declared;

"No car has never been up here before."

It struck me, It sounded like it discovered a whole new level that a car can achieve.

The fantasy goes on;

Discovery also starred in "Mission Impossible 3" at the chasing scene after Ethan's retrieving "The Rabbit's foot".

It is about 5 minute sequel, full with chasing action. You gotta watch it.

Simon Cowell 의 선구안

오늘 문득 어메리칸아이돌을 보다가 든 생각입니다.

심판 중에 사이먼 (Simon Cowell) 이라는 사람이 있는데, 실력이 뛰어나긴 하지만, 그 실력만큼 독설도 지독합니다. 나오는 후보마다 심한 독설과 직설화법으로 후보자를 울리거나, 심지어는 청중들한테서도 야유를 받지요.

그런데, 가만 보다보니, 가끔 이 사람이 아주 가끔 칭찬하는 사람들이 있는데, 처음에는 그 사람을 왜 칭찬하는지 잘 몰랐습니다. 예를 들면, 캐리 언더우드가 나온 Season 4편에서도 그 당시엔 다소 평범해 보이는 캐리 언더우드를 보고 단박에 찍어서 이렇게 말하죠.

"당신은 이번 시즌에서 우승할 뿐만 아니라, 여기 나온 어떤 후보보다 앨범을 많이 파는 사람이 될 겁니다."

과연 그의 말대로, 캐리언더우드는 최종우승을 했을 뿐만 아니라, 그녀의 데뷔앨범 "Some Hearts", 두번째 싱글앨범 "Jesus, Take the wheel" 역시 6주연속 빌보드 1위와 그래미상 수상까지 하는 등 여러 개의 플래티넘앨범과 수상경력을 화려하게 이어갔습니다.

캐리 언더우드 뿐 아니라, 심사 내내 독설을 뿜어내다가도 어느 순간 남들이 보지 못하는 진면목을 보고 "당신은 최종결선에 나갈거야"라고 말하는 사이먼의 말은, 곧 그의 예언이 현실로 나타날 것을 암시하는 것이기도 합니다.

벤처투자자에게도 그와 같은 선구안이 필요하지 않을까 생각해 봅니다. 하루에도 책상에 수북이 쌓이는 사업계획서들 중에서, 딱! 골라서 이 회사가 다음 번 구글이 될 것이라고 말할 수 있는 그런 심사역이 되어야하지 않을까요?

2010 ( US ) VC market outlook by Don Rainey

In Don Rainey's post on VentureBeat on Mar 16th, He mentions a few things to expect in VC market in 2010;

- Companies starved of fund-raising during the after-2008-financial-crisis flock to fund-raising events
- VC's are same. VC's are running to fund-raising events
- Out-of-cash companies will have less negotiation power in fund-raising
- Raise only the amount needed
- Stay with existing investors
- Look for investors that have complementary portfolio companies, which heighten the chances of an exit via merger or acquisition.
- VCs, in the meantime, need to look forward, not back.
